Courts and state agencies offer information about parole, probation, and other matters of public record that anyone can access. A person who has been convicted of a crime may be in jail, on parole, or on probation.

Probation means the convicted individual has the opportunity to spend their sentence in the community under supervision, while parolees serve time in prison before spending part of their conviction period within the community and have conditions they must meet — also under the watch of a supervising officer.

This resource covers the most useful methods for finding parolees as well as parole violators, absconders, hearings, and officers. It also touches on how to find information about probationers.

How To Run a Utah Probation Search for Free

The Utah Department of Corrections provides an offender search tool on its official website.1 This allows users to search by a person’s first, middle and last name or by their state offender identification number. It’s important to note each state keeps its own records.

The offender locator list includes a person’s ID, name, date of birth and gender. Clicking on a result in the list will show additional information, including whether the person is currently in jail or on probation or parole.

Another service providing information about hearings and decisions is the State of Utah Board of Pardons & Parole.2 The board website provides three search functions, allowing users to search by name, offender number or date range of the ruling.

Note: The search tool doesn’t cause the page to reload, so it’s not immediately obvious that the search has been completed.

After clicking Search, scroll down to view the results, which are shown in a table below the three search forms. The results include details about upcoming hearings and pending decisions as well as previous decisions about pardons and parole. If there are multiple matches, the table will have a scroll bar.

Information can also be obtained by checking out the Utah Adult Probation & Parole Department.

U.S. District Court records relating to federal civil cases since July 1989 and federal criminal cases since November 1992 are available via the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) service. This online service is available 24 hours a day.

There is a nominal fee for accessing documents, but as of November 2023, the fee cannot exceed $2.40 per docket or document. Users are sent a quarterly billing statement outlining the charges they incurred.

To use PACER, searchers must register by contacting the PACER Service Center. Applicants must provide a valid email address as part of the application process. Once an account has been activated, it can be used to search for court information by party names or case numbers.|

Third party sites can sometimes be of assistance when performing a probation search in Utah. However, many third-party sites charge for their results even though the data comes from the same official sources. Going directly to the court or government website maintaining the information saves time and money.

Find Probationer Records via Municipal & County Agencies in Utah

In 2022, Utah modernized its court information system to make it easier for people to access public records. Instead of records being spread across multiple county or city agencies, it’s now aggregated into a central database. This includes federal cases tried at the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

Information about cases held at federal district and state courts in Utah is published in the Xchange database.3 This covers domestic, civil and criminal cases, including both felonies and misdemeanors. The Xchange Public Case Search system includes court records from across the state, including major counties such as:

  • Salt Lake County
  • Washington County
  • Utah County
  • Davis County
  • Weber County

The Xchange database also maintains city-level cases, including Salt Lake City, West Valley City, West Jordan, Provo and Orem.

The records available on Xchange include all court information dating back to when the district courts started using the Courts Information System (CORIS) case management system. For most district courts in Utah, this dates back to 1998.

In some instances, courts have opted to convert old cases that predate CORIS. Where this has been done, the information available on Xchange may not be as comprehensive as information for newer cases.

There is a nominal fee for using Xchange. Records may still be available for free via public terminals at court locations, while arrest details can be found from county sheriff’s offices. For example, the Utah County Corrections Division offers an Arrested Person Search tool.4

Moreover, in Utah County, information about sex offenders is available via the Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry Office. It can be useful to check this in addition to parole and probation records, as this registry includes information about historic sex and child abuse offenders who have completed their parole or probation periods so may not appear on such records searches.

Searchers who are looking for more information about a case may find it useful to look at these court records instead of performing a probation search in Utah.

Each county has its own probation office, but these offices work with offenders and don’t typically handle public records. Information about some of the probation offices and any fugitive lists they maintain can be found below.

Look Up Probation Violations & Contact Details for Supervising Officers in UT

There are several databases that can be used to conduct a probation search in Utah for individuals wanted for violations of release.

This Statewide Warrants (SWW) search tool lists wanted individuals in the state of Utah.5 This list is populated via warrant information from courts that provide data to the Utah Criminal Justice Information System. Simply provide the first and last name of the person you’d like to search for.

The database provides the age, location, case number, court name and charges for any wanted individuals.

Individual county or city sheriff’s offices may provide their own fugitive lists, although many only publish information about the most-wanted fugitives. For example, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office Most Wanted Fugitives focuses on those who are wanted for felonies.6 Minor probation violations are unlikely to appear on the public list.

A person may feel the need to contact an offender’s probation officer to report a violation or a concern about their own safety. In cases where the offender is a juvenile, those who are named as the victim of the crime may be sent a letter from a juvenile probation officer, providing information about the case. A list of Utah probation officers and their contact details can be found on the U.S. District Court website.

If you haven’t received information about the officer handling the case, contact the probation office for that offender. The office can pass on information to the relevant probation officer.

Victims of crime can also request support from the Utah Office for the Victims of Crime, operated by the Department of Corrections. There are several ways to contact the office:

In Person:

Utah Office for Victims of Crime (UOVC)
350 East 500 South, Suite 200
Salt Lake City, Utah 84111

Phone: 800-621-7444
Email: crimevictims@utah.gov
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Additionally, such information can also be acquired from the probation departments. Feel free to get in touch with the Utah Probation Offices.
